Award types

Karel Bakker Award

A prestigious 4-yearly award given to honor scientists and clinicians who have made major contributions to the understanding, prevention and treatment of diabetic foot disease.
Recipients should fulfil the following criteria:

  • dedicated to diabetic foot disease for many years

  • acts as the patient’s advocate

  • is an excellent and original scientist

  • is an example of a multidisciplinary team player

  • shares his/her expertise by teaching and training

Diabetic Foot Medal of Honour

A quadrennial award for a clinician who has made outstanding and innovative contributions to the detection, treatment and prevention of diabetic foot disease, and who plays a pivotal role in translating science into daily care.

In 2019 – Diabetic Foot Medal of Honour

Awarded to two internationally well-known endocrinologists who have made many important contributions to diabetic foot care worldwide:

  • Dr. Kristien Van Acker (Chimay, Belgium)
    Recognized for her activities in diabetic foot education and organization of care, her role in multidisciplinary projects, and her leadership in national preventive and treatment programs. She chaired many international training programs and was the founder and president of D-Foot International. She is (co-)author of more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
  • Dr. Zulfiqarali Abbas (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania)
    Played an essential role in enhancing awareness of diabetic foot disease in Africa and setting up education programs for healthcare workers. He chairs the Pan-African Diabetic Foot Study Group and is an executive working group member of the IWGDF. He has written extensively on diabetic foot disease and has more than 50 publications.
In 2015 – Diabetic Foot Medal of Honour
  • Professor Jan Rauwerda
    Honored at the presidential dinner (May 20, 2015, in the Mauritshuis) for 25 years treasuring the ISDF / IWGDF. Awarded with the Diabetic Foot Medal of Honor by ISDF’s president, Professor Nicolaas Schaper.
In 2015 – Karel Bakker Award
  • Professor Ben Lipsky
    The absolute highlight of the Symposium was the prestigious Karel Bakker award, given to Professor Ben Lipsky. Previous award winners were Professor A. Boulton, Professor J. Apelqvist, Mrs. A. Foster, Professor P. Cavanagh and Professor M. Edmonds.
    Professor Lipsky’s work in diabetic foot infections has been pivotal in improving diagnosis and management, and he has published more than 220 scientific papers. He has been closely involved in guideline development in the USA and worldwide.
In 2011 – International Diabetic Foot Award
  • Professor Mike Edmonds

    The highlight of that year’s Symposium was the International Diabetic Foot Award, presented to Professor Michael Edmonds. Founder of the world’s first specialist multidisciplinary diabetic foot clinic at King’s College Hospital, he transformed care for people with diabetes and drastically reduced major amputations. He has authored influential textbooks, contributed to international guidelines, and served as a mentor and advisor to healthcare professionals around the world.

In 2007 – International Diabetic Foot Award
  • Professor Peter Cavanagh

    The highlight of that year’s Symposium was the International Diabetic Foot Award, presented to Professor Peter R. Cavanagh. A world-leading expert in biomechanics, Professor Cavanagh made pioneering contributions to understanding foot pressure, tissue mechanics and ulcer prevention in people with diabetes. He has authored numerous influential papers and books, and his innovative research has shaped modern approaches to diabetic foot care.

In 2003 – International Diabetic Foot Award
  • Podiatrist Ali Foster

    The highlight of this year’s Symposium was the presentation of the International Diabetic Foot Award to the late Ali Foster. As Lead Clinical Specialist Podiatrist at King’s College Hospital NHS Trust, Ms. Foster made outstanding contributions to diabetic foot care through her clinical expertise, leadership and scholarship. She received several prestigious honours, including the Meritorious Award of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and the M. Viswanathan Gold Medal, and was recognised nationally for her service to the NHS. A widely respected lecturer and author, her work continues to influence best practice worldwide.

In 1999 – International Diabetic Foot Award
  • Professor Jan Apelqvist

    The highlight of the 1999 Symposium was the presentation of the International Diabetic Foot Award to Associate Professor Jan Apelqvist. As a leading clinician and researcher at Malmö University Hospital and Lund University, Dr. Apelqvist made exceptional contributions to the understanding and prevention of diabetic foot complications. His pioneering work in multidisciplinary care, ulcer classification and amputation prevention helped shape modern diabetic foot management worldwide. A highly respected lecturer, researcher and guideline contributor, his influence on both clinical practice and international standards has been profound.
